Registry of the Assumption

The two large volumes belong to the administrative area of the Cathedral Chapter. One is a register of administration of the farms owned by the Chapter of the Assumption and reports annually the various items of income and outcome related to the management of farms, the numbers of cattle, the type and amount of crops, the costs for the personnel to be employed in the field works, the incomes deriving from sales of meat, cheese, wool, etc. The register has a further historical value since on one page of the volume (c.4408) the compiler wanted to leave a trace of the city of the Altamura sack perpetrated by the army of Cardinal Fabrizio Ruffo during 1799. It is the chronicle of what happened in the city during those chaotic and tragic hours. The emotional impact and the social consequences of the story were such as to induce the anonymous compiler to "title" the chronicle with the Hebrew expression Zecher le Chorban (wrong writing of Zecher l’Churban), that is "remember the destruction", with clear reference to that of the temple in Jerusalem.
