The monstrance reliquary

Supported by a wooden moulded base, the monstrance reliquary is made up of embossed silver lamellas placed on a wooden structure. On curl feet develop volutes joined by an acanthus leaf; the same decorative motif is repeated in the knot moulded by girals. Phytomorphic naturalistic elements surround the oval case profiled by a frame; the same decorative motifs adorn the apex of the artefact today without relic. Its decoration can be compared to the wide Neapolitan production of the Baroque period (see models in Cascione 2000 and Boraccesi 2003). On the left foot of the reliquary there are three punches (repeated in the center of the artefact at the bottom right of the case): the stamp of the art that shows the number 730, indicating the year of stamping, the console's logo, identified with Domenico Giordano , who held the office in the years 1721, 1724, 1727, 1733, 1736, 1739, 1744, 1747, 1748. In the current state of studies, the puncher is of the silversmith F. + C., known as Francesco Cangiani; this mark was found on various artefacts of the first twenty years of the eighteenth century. Paying attention to the dates you can find an aporia between the year of the stamp of art and the regency period of the console; this mismatch can be motivated by disturbances identified within the life of the corporation.
